WHAT'S GOIN' ON?

Trying to live a practical, but compassionate life towards all living creatures (animal, mineral, vegetable, humanable) without being a self-righteous ass.

Rap stars and their puppies

I'm pretty sickened by a story I just read on BBC, of rapper DMX who left his 12 dogs in charge of a caretaker, for several months, and the dogs have been found dead or emaciated/un-fed/un-hydrated. His lawyer claims he loves these animals like family, they just got a bad caretaker. What-ev-er. If you have a job where you're traveling all the time, maybe you shouldn't have 12 dogs. Maybe you should have one, whom you take with you? Even Paris manages that!

But I think the real problem is that tough dogs, pit bulls and the like, have become yet another sign of Success for rappers. I get the impression that being able to physically show signs of your success--the chains, the diamonds, the furs--is a really strong... I don't know what word to use... impulse? There's a culture around this. In Kanye West's song about conflict diamonds, he says something about this--that you know you shouldn't buy these diamonds, but you still feel that disappointment because having them means You've Made It.

Anyway, I've seen enough rappers with their dog kennels to make me suspect dogs are just one more accessory. Hey, Paris' dog might be an accessory too, but that little munchkin gets to ride around in mom's purse all day. Woo! The guys are trying to make guard dog and breeding businesses, and I is OUT. Go sell your clothing lines, and leave the puppies out of it.
