La Dolce Vegan! by Sarah Kramer: I was in the mood for a new cookbook, so I sat down at work, after my shift, with a big stack of veg cookbooks to look at. Refresh, a couple Rose Roberts books, and the two Barnard & Kramers (How It All Vegan and The Garden of Vegan), plus Kramer's third book, which I didn't know existed (Barnard's gone on to nursing): La Dolce Vegan! (2005) This is the one I finally bought.
Reading through, I found out that the 3 "Vegan" series books (Barnard and or Kramer) are themed thus: book one is for people starting into veganism, to give information, and replace missed foods; the second is more gourmet cooking; and the last one by Kramer is meant for people without a lot of time. Yay! Most of her recipes are meant to be quick to make, with easy to find ingredients, and the portions are for two people. And from what I've cooked so far, this is all true.
The book is also fatter than its predecessors: 334 pages for $24.95 Canadian... that's pretty good. The recipes I've tried so far have all been Great, which is a better track record than Vegan with a Vengeance.
Quantities: One thing I love about the Kramer book is the quantities are just right for 1-2 people. From now on I'm going to cut recipes from other books that look too big, because I hate ending up with a ton of something that's not good! Or can't be frozen/eaten fast enough.
Recipes I make all the time:
raspberry pancakes
cajun tomato potatoes
Recipes I have to resist making all the time:
doughnut holes
peanut butter cookies
Recipes to make again:
leek soup
ginger carrot soup
Wouldn't make again:
eggplant bharta: wasn't horrid, but... bleh (hubby concurred)
tip top tofu loaf: taste wasn't inspiring enough to try again
green bean zasmahka: underwhelming... in fact, it was downright odd...
mashed parsnips & potatoes: this recipe is totally fine, i just didn't like it more than regular ole mashed potatoes
